What the décima sees

Another way of making poetry is to look for the hidden voice, the stories that live behind an image. Here are photographs of mine, and the poem I hear in each of them.

The décimas are published in their original Spanish, as all literary texts on this site are. A décima is the ten-line stanza of Cuban poetry and song.

Waves breaking on the rocks of the coast, under a cloudy sky

ALS

One that outgrew its frame

It began like the others, looking at a photograph. But it grew three movements, each with its own tempo, and no longer fitted in ten lines. It has a room of its own.

Sunset over the Malecón sea wall, with the sun breaking through the clouds

Sonata de la lluvia

Three movements in décimas: a prelude, a downpour and what remains afterwards. With Fito Páez, Noel Nicola and Santiago Feliú looking in on each.

It won me the Premio Colateral Yasmina Calcines in 2026.
